Lithium Poly-Carbon Monofluoride Battery

In this cell, the cathode active material is a fluorinated carbon, which is reduced to carbon and lithium fluoride during cell discharging. The system has good moderate and low rate capability at temperatures above -30°C. These cells were used at one time in the CF Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) battery, because of development problems with Li/SO2 cells. Unfortunately, at that time, a CF Hercules crashed near Alert during a snowstorm and the PLB batteries only functioned for a few minutes because of the cold temperatures. Li/SO2 batteries have now replaced all these.
