The Øresund Bridge was opened on Saturday July 1 2000, in the presence of Denmark's Queen Margrethe, Sweden's King Carl Gustaf and 10,000 invited guests. During the inauguration ceremony, which was watched by hundreds of millions of TV viewers across the world, four bridge builders from the Øresund project greeted the Queen and King on the bridge in a symbolic meeting to mark the completion of 5 years' construction work.
